History Remembered

By Kirt Ramirez

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, actors Noah Wagner, Jill Prout and Dennis Kortheuer pause between showings of “Oops, I Didn’t Know it was You,” during the Historical Society of Long Beach’s 29th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour Saturday, Oct. 25. With eight featured performances portraying people buried at the old Sunnyside and Municipal Cemeteries, this act told the story of John and Nellie Bowers, and Richard Ward.  Sunnyside and Municipal were once one cemetery but today are two graveyards side-by-side, holding the remains of persons once part of society. Many tombstones stand upright and display familiar names such as Wardlow, Stearns and Heartwell. The oldest headstone dates to a death in 1878 and can be found in Municipal Cemetery.
