LB Announces Sailing Venue for LA28 Olympics
A major update has been made in preparation for the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympic Games, as the city of Long Beach announces that it has finalized a venue plan for Sailing.
The announcement, which was made on June 30 by Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA 28), states that the city of Long Beach will share the role of host of Olympic Sailing along the Belmont Shore Coast, as well along at the Port of Los Angeles.
According to the LA28 Organizing Committee, the Port of LA will host six boating events: Men’s and Women’s Dinghy, Men’s and Women’s Skiff, Mixed Dinghy and Mixed Multihull. Meanwhile Long Beach’s Belmont Shore will host four boarding events: Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing and Men’s and Women’s Kite.
“After close coordination with the Cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach, along with collaboration from World Sailing, we are excited about the opportunity to utilize two of the best locations along the Pacific coastline for Sailing competitions in 2028,” said LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover. “We look forward to hosting the world’s best sailors in our iconic Host City of LA and the Venue City of Long Beach as both locations prepare to stage unforgettable events.”
This will not be the first time that both Long Beach and the Port of LA have been given the opportunity to host sailing events in the Olympics. During the 1932 Olympics, the Port of LA hosted sailing at their Outer Harbor and during the 1984 Games, Long Beach hosted Sailing.
Long Beach city officials are delighted for the venue plan being finalized. According to Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson, having the venue plan finalized solidifies another major step in Long Beach’s history as a Venue City.
“Long Beach is the premiere location for windsurfing and kite – two outstanding sailing events that will captivate spectators,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. “We hosted Sailing competitions during the 1984 Olympic Games, and we cannot wait to continue our legacy and show our beautiful coastline to the world once again in 2028.”
Los Angeles City officials also expressed their approval of the venue plan’s finalization. According to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, the city is looking forward to being able to host Sailing once more, much like in the 1932 Olympics.
“Sailing has a long history in our city and San Pedro will shine on the world stage,” said Mayor Bass. “We look forward to welcoming the world’s best sailors to compete in these exciting events. I want to thank Councilmember McOsker and all the partners for coming together as we continue to prepare for the 2028 Games.”
“Nearly a century after the Port of Los Angeles first welcomed Olympic sailors in 1932, we’re bringing that spirit back home with ten sailing events across our Southern California coastline in 2028. This will be a moment of pride for every family and every neighborhood in our city,” said Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson.
LA28 also stated in their official announcement that, in an effort to optimize viewership for the Olympics, as well as media and broadcast coverage, the Sailing events will be staged consecutively with the boards first up at Belmont Shore in Long Beach, followed by the boat racing portion of the sailing competition in Port of Los Angeles. The two venues will also be approximately 10 miles from each other.
Outside of Sailing, the city is also still scheduled to host other major Olympic events across Long Beach. These events include, but are not limited to:
- Beach Volleyball (Held at Alamitos Beach)
- Handball (Held at Long Beach Arena)
- Water Polo (Held at Long Beach Convention Center)
- Marathon Swimming (Held at Long Beach Waterfront)
The 2028 Summer Olympic Games will officially take place from July 14 – July 30, 2028, followed by the 2028 Summer Paralympic Games will take place Aug. 15 through Aug. 27, 2028. For more information, you can visit LA28’s official website at https://la28.org/en.html.
