THE BIG BOATS in the 50th annual Transpacific Yacht Race cross the start line off of Point Fermin heading for their first mark of the course, the West End of Catalina Island on July 13. They then navigated southwest on their 2,200-mile race to the finish line in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Early Monday morning the 70-foot Orient Express, piloted by Gladstone Restaurateur John Sangmeister, began taking on water and their 10-member crew was rescued by the 68-foot Pyewacket, skippered by Roy Disney, grandnephew of Walt Disney.
