The Places That Hold Long Beach Together
A peaceful afternoon at the Long Beach Shoreline Marina offers a calm place to unwind and relax. A popular gathering spot for locals or visitors catching sight of the boats.
Elizabeth Palafox talked fondly about the city of Long Beach, California, the place she has been connected to her whole life, thanks to her father. Her relationship to the city is one shaped by the love of its culture and the comfort it brings, offering so much to many.
As a teenager, Palafox began navigating the city on her own and came to appreciate all it has to offer. She said the atmosphere in Long Beach has always felt different from that of other cities, making it a place she will always come back to.
“Long Beach definitely feels like home,” said Palafox. “I’ve often thought of where I would live in the future if I were to live out of Long Beach, but I’ve realized that I haven’t found anywhere that really compares.”
Palafox said Long Beach reflects the qualities she admires within her community and the way individuals live. Her special place in Long Beach is Silverado Park, a spot where she would often visit as a child with her mother and loved ones, filled with nostalgia and happy times.
She described her favorite go-to spot as Ramen Hub in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood, a place she has shared with so many others, known for its loving atmosphere, food and convenience. Palafox explained that no other place compares to this ramen spot, and that has not changed for her and her friends.
“It shows a different side of the community and love for ramen that I have not seen elsewhere yet,” said Palafox. “It’s also very convenient for late night bites, which adds to the experience.”
She expressed seeing the city she was born and raised in with rose-colored glasses, creating a partial bias to Long Beach for her, but not one she would change. Palafox’s impression of the city began as one of curiosity and a dismissal of culture but grew to be appreciative of all it has become and will continue to be.
“Long Beach means a lot to me,” said Palafox. “It means growth and opportunity for who I was and who I will become. It means a place where I can grow and learn about various cultures other than my own.”
Long-time visitor Leslie Valdez was introduced to the city of Long Beach through friends, finding the city to be a nice area and being excited to explore it at every opportunity. Growing up in the nearby city of South Gate, she occasionally noticed how freely members of the community expressed themselves.
Valdez mentioned her favorite place is Fingerprints Music, where they are known for selling many vinyl records, CDs and music-related merchandise in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood. She loves the artistic ambience of the place, as they frequently host musicians and bands.
“The city is rich in its love and representation of the arts, whether it be music, fashion, artwork, etc,” said Valdez. “Personally, I have always enjoyed the arts and expressing myself creatively therefore Long Beach is an amazing place to showcase that.”
She described finding immense inspiration from random locations in the city and gravitating toward its cultural scene. Valdez recalled feeling the distinct sensation that Long Beach was not like other cities she’s visited, but rather full of vibrancy and community.
A beautiful, scenic place Valdez enjoys visiting is the Pine Avenue Pier, where she spent most of her time visiting during the beginning of her college career. Long before meeting her recent friend group, she would visit this location for its beautiful scenery, remembering the peaceful times she had there.
“Long Beach means connection, diversity, freedom of expression and adventure,” said Valdez. “It’s a city where some of my friends are from and where we’ve made such meaningful memories together.”
