Player of the Week: Joe Fryer, Men’s Golf – Junior Joe Fryer shot a final-round 67 (-5) at the Sacramento State Invitational to charge up the leaderboard and claim individual medalist honors for the second time in his career.

 

Men’s Basketball (15-18)

Big West Tournament

Lost vs. (4) Cal State Fullerton, 76-74

Gabe Levin and Deishuan Booker both scored 22 points for the Beach, but two late chances didn’t fall as Long Beach State lost to the eventual tournament champions.     

 

Women’s Basketball (8-23)

Lost vs. (6) UC Riverside, 79-66

Senior Cecily Wilson led Long Beach State with 22 points, two shy of her career-high, in her final game with the Beach as LBSU ended its season with a 79-66 loss in the First Round of the Big West Tournament.

 

No. 1 Men’s Volleyball (17-0, 2-0 Big West)

Won vs. Mount Olive, 3-0 [25-18, 25-16, 25-14]

After sweeping Mount Olive, the Long Beach State men’s volleyball team improved to 17-0 on the year marking the best start to the season in program history.

 

Baseball (5-11)

Won vs. No. 10 Vanderbilt, 4-3

Lost at No. 8 Texas A&M, 3-1

The brutally difficult schedule continues for the Dirtbags, who just finished playing seven consecutive games against Top 10 teams from the SEC. LBSU went 2-5 in that stretch, with wins over Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

Louisville Slugger Invitational

Won vs. Michigan State, 4-2

Won vs. Boston, 1-0 (8)

Lost vs. San Jose State, 7-3

Won vs. San Diego State, 5-0 (5)

Lost vs. No. 3 UCLA, 6-5

Nichole Fry drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning against Boston and hit .588 in six games last week with seven RBI and four doubles. 

 

No. 15 Women’s Water Polo (8-9, 1-0 Big West)

Won vs. No. 16 UC Santa Barbara, 6-5

Won vs. George Washington, 15-7

Playing in their first home contests of the season, LBSU picked up two wins including a huge Big West opening win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.

 

Women’s Tennis (6-5, 2-1 Big West)

Won vs. Penn, 4-3

Won vs. Furman, 6-1

Match vs. UC Davis – Cancelled due to weather

The Long Beach State women’s tennis team has won its last three straight matches after picking up a pair of victories over Penn and Furman last week.

 

No. 7 Beach Volleyball (3-1)

Won vs. No. 10 Arizona, 3-2

Lost vs. No. 1 Pepperdine, 3-2

Long Beach State nearly upset No. 1 Pepperdine in the team’s home opener, with flights three and five picking up wins and flight four heading to three sets in the loss.

@ San Diego College Challenge

@ Ben Brown Invitational

Long Beach State competed in a pair of local meets over the weekend, sending the majority of the squad to the San Diego College Challenge and a handful of athletes to the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton. Down in La Jolla, LBSU collected a total of nine event wins, led by junior Josh Carr’s wins in the men’s hammer and discus throw.

The Beach finished in a tie with Grand Canyon at the top of the team standings after three rounds at the Sacramento State Invitational.  

 

Women’s Golf

@ Arizona Wildcat Invitational

Long Beach State set a single-round record in the first round at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational, firing a 6-under 282 as a team. Holland Shourds finished in the Top 10 at the tournament.
