Traffic Fatality in North Long Beach

Upon arrival officers found an elderly male pedestrian on Long Beach Boulevard north of Cambridge Street [just north of the 710 Freeway] with life-threatening injuries. Long Beach Fire Department responded and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was attempting to cross Long Beach Blvd., eastbound through a raised center median with vegetation, when he stepped out into the #1 lane of northbound Long Beach Blvd., when he was struck by a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by a 68-year-old male resident of Los Angeles.

The pedestrian was outside of a crosswalk when he entered the northbound #1 lane of Long Beach Blvd. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. He was later released pending further investigation.

The victim is only being identified as a 73-year-old of resident of Los Angeles, pending notification of next of kin.
