Player of the Week: Alyssa Gonzalez, Softball – Capped a four-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning against No. 2 Oklahoma with a two-run double to hand the Sooners their only loss of the season so far. Hit .389 (7-for-18) overall with three doubles at the Hillenbrand Invitational.

-- Joshua Morgan set Long Beach State’s single-season blocks record (now with 64) and also led the Beach in scoring in both games, including a career-high 17 against UC Riverside.

 

Women’s Basketball (11-13, 6-5 Big West)

Lost at UC Riverside, 58-57

--The Beach played a pair of defensively strong contests as they rallied to defeat UCSB on Thursday, but their come-from-behind effort at UCR came up just short. Justina King led the Beach with 20.0 points per game last week including a season-high 23-point performance at UCR.

 

No. 4 Men’s Volleyball (7-1)
Won vs. Alumni, 2-0 [25-20, 25-16]

--Long Beach State welcomed back more than 30 alumni for the annual alumni match. The Beach played a best 2-of-3 contest and swept the alumni. Some of the former LBSU players who made their return to the Beach included Taylor Crabb, Brett Winslow, Brett Schroder, Chris Sieffert, Andrew Sato and Ian Satterfield.

Win vs. Cal, 4-0

Loss vs. Cal, 7-5

-- The Dirtbags opened the season with a series victory over Cal, led by terrific starting pitching in the first two games. LBSU’s starters—Adam Seminaris and Alfredo Ruiz—combined for 13 shutout innings with 21 strikeouts and no walks.

Lost 2-1 at No. 4 Arizona

Won 5-4 vs. No. 2 Oklahoma

Won 8-7 vs. Northern Iowa

-- Long Beach State went 3-2 at the Hillenbrand Invitational, with the team’s only losses coming on the road against the hosts, No. 4 Arizona. Softball has only one loss against a currently unranked opponent this season, a one-run loss to Utah Valley.

at Don Kirby Elite

-- Long Beach State took part in the Don Kirby Elite in New Mexico and hit numerous top ten marks in program history. Senior Jason Smith again made headlines by finishing as the top collegiate performer in the men’s long jump at the USATF Indoor Championships while setting a school record in the event.
