The Week at Long Beach State

Player of the Week: Luis Ramirez, Baseball – RHP Luis Ramirez racked up 12 strikeouts against Wake Forest on Saturday, becoming the first Dirtbags freshman to strike out 12 batters since Jered Weaver in 2002. He retired the final 17 batters he faced and earned his first career win.

Men’s Basketball (10-18, 5-7 Big West)
Lost at UC Irvine, 70-55
Won vs. Hawaii, 64-60
Michael Carter III averaged 15.5 points and scored a team-high 15 points in the win over Hawaii. Long Beach State has now won three of their last four.

Women’s Basketball (11-4, 6-6 Big West)
Lost vs. UC Irvine, 70-61
The Beach were led by Justina King and Cydnee Kinslow in a tough setback against UCI. King finished the game with 16 points and five assists, while Kinslow tallied all 12 of her points from long distance sinking four threes.

No. 4 Men’s Volleyball (8-1)
Won vs. Westcliff, 3-0 [25-15, 25-13, 25-15]
Long Beach State registered its highest hitting percentage (.500) of the season as setters Carlos Rivera and Gary Trejo split setter duties. Ryan Poole led the Beach with nine kills and eight digs, while hitting .412.

Won vs. No. 17 Wake Forest, 6-2
Won vs. No. 17 Wake Forest, 7-3
Won vs. No. 17 Wake Forest, 6-0
The Dirtbags completed the first sweep of an ACC team in program history, taking all three against the Demon Deacons. Dirtbags pitchers allowed just five runs on 12 hits all series to the high-powered Wake Forest lineup, holding them scoreless over the final 16 innings of the series.

Softball (8-7) at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic
Lost vs. Utah, 5-0
Won vs. Idaho State, 7-1
Lost vs. No. 25 Northwestern, 11-6
Won vs. Oregon State, 2-1
Won vs. Seattle, 9-2
Sydney McCollum hit .474 with 5 RBI, including the game-winning hit against Oregon State, while Ashley Coleman pitched a pair of complete games, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.93 ERA.

No. 12 Women’s Water Polo (8-5) at Triton Invite
Lost vs. No. 6 UC Irvine, 12-9
Lost vs. No. 16 Loyola Marymount, 11-8
Won vs. No. 21 University of Pacific, 12-7
Lost vs. No. 22 San Diego State, 10-9
Long Beach State took 13th place at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Beach picked up their lone victory against Pacific. In the game Jamie Oberman, Orsi Hertzka and Anne de Kleer each had a hat trick.

Women’s Tennis (5-2, 2-0 BWC)
Lost at San Diego, 4-1
Won at UC Riverside, 5-0
The Beach bounced back from a road loss at San Diego with a comfortable Big West victory at UC Riverside. LBSU improved to 24-0 all-time against the Highlanders to move to 2-0 in Big West matches this season.

Women’s Golf Hosted Rebel Beach Invitational
Sophomore Hannah Ko finished just outside the Top 10 in a tie for 11th place as Long Beach State finished in fifth overall as a team at the Rebel Beach Invitational, hosted by Spanish Trail Country Club where LBSU will be hosting the Big West Championships to close the regular season.

Men’s Golf at John A. Burns Intercollegiate
Senior Hunter Epson led the Beach with a 12th place finish after shooting a 68 in the final round to finish 3-under par. The Beach finished 12th in the 21-team tournament and were the top finisher among four competing Big West schools.
