This Week at Long Beach State

Player of the Week: Cielo Meza, Softball – Sophomore Cielo Meza threw the 27th No-Hitter in school history against No. 21 Minnesota, striking out 11 in just one of three great performances. Over 17.0 innings last week, Meza allowed just one hit and is now 9-0 in 2018.

Deishuan Booker had an outstanding week, scoring a career-high 20 points, including the game-winner at UC Santa Barbara before putting up a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds against UCR.

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak to clinch the No. 7 seed in the Big West Tournament.

No. 1 Men’s Volleyball (16-0, 2-0 Big West)
Won at No. 12 CSUN, 3-0 [25-22, 25-23, 25-20]
Won vs. No. 12 CSUN, 3-0 [25-18, 25-18, 25-17]
The top-ranked LBSU men’s volleyball has improved to 16-0 on the year, tying the best start in program history matching the 1992 squad.

The Dirtbags improved to 3-0 in the first game of a series and handed Ole Miss its first loss of the season in a 4-3 win in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, but couldn’t win the series against the Top 10 foe. Earlier in the week, LBSU had a 10-run outburst in the 5th inning of its 16-4 win over Arizona State. It’s just the ninth time in program history Long Beach State has scored double-digit runs in a single inning and it was the first such occurrence since 2007.

Junior Nichole Fry drove in the winning run against both San Diego and #21 Minnesota, while LT Torres led the team on the weekend, hitting .545 (6-for-11).

Won vs. Bucknell, 9-6
Lost at No. 9 Michigan, 8-6
Won vs. Iona, 8-4
At the Wolverine Invitational, the Beach went 3-1 to move to 6-9 to finish off tournament play during the non-conference schedule.

Women’s Tennis (4-5, 2-1 Big West)
Won vs. UC Irvine, 6-0
The Beach tennis team won all six singles matches to roll past the Anteaters last week.

No. 7 Beach Volleyball (2-0)
Won vs. CSU Bakersfield, 5-0
Won at CSUN, 5-0
Long Beach State opened the season with a pair of sweeps over Big West Conference schools on the road in Northridge.

Track and Field
Beach Opener
Long Beach State began its outdoor schedule with the Beach Opener on Saturday, boasting 13 individual event winners during the full day of competition against USC and a host of junior colleges from around Southern California.

Men’s Golf
at Southwestern Intercollegiate
Against a top field, Long Beach State finished in 14th place at the Southwestern Invitational. Junior Andres Gonzalez led the Beach individually in a tie for 24th.

Women’s Golf
at Rebel Beach Invitational
Jennifer Yu and Cara Barker shared the team lead at the Rebel Beach Invitational, as Long Beach State finished fifth among the 12-team field in Las Vegas.
