Save Port Mural

The 74-foot, 1959 hand-painted mural of the development of the Port of Long Beach faces demolition. Enjoy photos of this important cultural artifact and learn about its massive construction from Dr. Louise Ivers, Professor Emeritus of Art at California State University, Dominguez Hills and author of “Long Beach, A History Through Its Architecture.”

The mural was hand-painted by Paul Marciel Souza using tiles manufactured by Gladding McBean, the premier California terracotta company founded in 1875. Cheryl Perry, President of both Long Beach Heritage and the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association, will address current efforts to protect and relocate this historical treasure on Saturday, April 29, 3 p.m. at the Long Beach Historical Society, 4260 Atlantic Blvd.

George and Carmela Cunningham, journalists, publishers and co-authors of “Port Town: How the People of Long Beach Built, Defended, and Profited from Their Harbor,” will provide an overview of the port’s history. The program will conclude with a reception and book-signing. Copies of the authors’ books will be available for purchase.

Urban Designer on TV

Alan Pullman, noted architect and urban designer, will be the guest on the next edition of Straight Talk. He joins host Art Levine to discuss some of the many projects designed by his creative shop, Studio One Eleven. These include the new terminal at the Long Beach Airport and the revived City Place downtown.

This Straight Talk show will air in Long Beach/Signal Hill on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on LBTV Channel 3 and Frontier FiOS 21. It also airs Saturday and Sunday in Long Beach and 70 surrounding cities at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Charter Channel 188. It will be repeated the following weekend at the same times. Straight Talk is also viewable on demand at www.StraightTalkTV.com and on YouTube.

Shore Friends

Friends of Belmont Shore is meeting on Thursday, May 4, at  6 p.m. at the St. Bartholomew Church Meeting Hall, 5100 Broadway. Speakers include Fire Chief Mike DuRee, developers from the Second & PCH project and Justin Rudd addressing his foundation events.

Garden Tour

For over twenty years, Long Beach Organic, Inc. (LBO) has provided a valuable resource to the residents of Long Beach, CA by transforming vacant city lots into organic community gardens for local and sustainable food production.

At the peak of the spring season, LBO will provide a unique opportunity to celebrate their gardens with the Seventh Annual Spring Garden Tour and Wine Tasting event on Sunday, May 7. Tour guests will travel by charter bus from Alamitos Bay to four of the nine gardens operated by LBO. Guests will enjoy a healthy menu of delectable dishes freshly prepared with vegan-friendly garden and farmer’s market ingredients, a variety of premium California wine and live music at every stop.

The event will be held 1-6 p.m. and is open to the public. Space is limited and RSVP is required at reservations@longbeachorganic.org. The cost to attend for non-LBO members is $125 which includes a one-year membership to the organization. Current LBO gardeners can attend with one guest for $115. Each fee is rendered a donation and is tax-deductible.

The tour will feature live music by Little Radios, Onstage Music Academy and the Long Beach Community Band Saxaphone Quartet.

Making Wind Chimes

In collaboration with MADE by Millworks and Rockler Woodworking, Super Thingmaker has announced its first maker event in Long Beach called “MADE for Mom.”

On Sunday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., a week before Mothers Day, makers of all ages can come to create a unique gift for mom– musically-tuned wind chimes made from metal tubing, wood, twine and found objects. All materials, tools and instructions will be provided, plus a pro woodworker from Rockler will help with fabrication, machining and design tips. The project will take about one hour to complete.

Long Beach City Auditor Laura Doud will be the speaker at the Long Beach Republican Women Federated breakfast meeting on Saturday, May 13. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Long Beach Airport Marriott Hotel, 4700 Airport Plaza Drive.

No Sharia Law

On Saturday, May 20, former U.S. Secret Service Agent James “Jim” McCully, who served under four U.S. presidents, will share his Secret Service experiences and the importance of preventing Sharia law anywhere in the United States.
