Amazon Pharmacy Kiosks Debut
Amazon Pharmacy will begin piloting prescription vending machines, known as Amazon Pharmacy Kiosks, at select One Medical clinics across the greater Los Angeles area starting in December 2025, including a location in Long Beach. The kiosks are an effort to allow patients to pick up commonly prescribed medications on-site within minutes of completing their medical appointments.
The pilot program aims to reduce hurdles to treatment by eliminating the need for patients to make a separate trip to a pharmacy after seeing their doctor. Amazon Pharmacy cites data that nearly one-third of prescriptions in the U.S. are never filled annually.
The Long Beach location participating in the pilot is the One Medical office at 6460 E Pacific Coast Highway, Suite D-210, in the 2nd & PCH area. Other locations included in the initial launch across the region are Downtown LA, West LA, Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.
What is a Pharmacy Kiosk?
The Amazon Pharmacy Kiosk is an automated machine located within participating One Medical offices that is designed to dispense prescriptions. It functions as an extension of the online pharmacy service, bringing the ability to fill a prescription directly to the point of care. The kiosks are stocked with a curated inventory of medications based on the prescribing patterns specific to the local One Medical office.
When a patient has a prescription sent to Amazon Pharmacy during an in-office appointment, they can choose to pick it up from the kiosk when they place their order through the Amazon app. Once the order is placed, the medication is usually ready for pickup within minutes.
To use the kiosk, a patient must have an Amazon Pharmacy account. After receiving a notification that the order is ready, the patient scans a QR code at the kiosk to verify their identity within the Amazon Pharmacy system. A robotic arm inside the kiosk retrieves and labels the medication with the required prescription information. A licensed Amazon pharmacist remotely oversees the prescription process, reviewing relevant medical history and other prescriptions. Before the prescription is released, the patient signs a consent form.
Dr. Andrew Diamond, Chief Medical Officer at One Medical, noted that delays in starting medication can negatively affect treatment outcomes.
“The ability to know a patient is leaving our office with their medication in hand – especially for conditions requiring immediate treatment like infections – can make a meaningful difference in their care journey,” he said.
If a patient has questions about their medication, an Amazon Pharmacy licensed pharmacist is available for consultation via video chat on the kiosk screen or via phone. The kiosk is equipped with a telephone for privacy during video consultations and no patient information is displayed on the screen. There is no additional cost to use the kiosk; patients pay for the medication, including their health insurance.
However, the kiosks do not contain all types of medications. Excluded items include controlled substances (such as Adderall), medications requiring refrigeration (like Wegovy) and needles, except EpiPens.
