Barnes & Noble’s Marina Pacifica Store Reopening Draws Crowds

By Sebastian Grewal

After months of anticipation and excitement, Barnes & Noble successfully reopened its extensively renovated Marina Pacifica location on Wednesday, November 19th, restoring a beloved literary hub to the Long Beach community just in time for the bustling holiday season. The event marked the return of a bookstore that has served local readers for nearly three decades, now refreshed with a modern design and a renewed focus on engaging readers of all ages.

The store at 6326 E. Pacific Coast Highway, which first opened in 1996, temporarily closed in May to undergo a major redesign. The remodeled 15,000-square-foot space reopened at a moment when Barnes & Noble is experiencing significant national momentum, having surpassed 700 locations nationwide after falling below 600 just two years ago. This growth reflects a renewed commitment to building community-driven, experiential bookstores that blend the warmth of independent shops with the scale and resources of a historic national chain.

A Grand Reopening with Star Power

The grand reopening celebration began at 10 a.m. on the 19th, drawing crowds eager to see the revamped space. Bestselling author and illustrator Salina Yoon cut the ceremonial ribbon and signed copies of her newest children’s book, Kat & Mouse: I Like Cheese! Later that afternoon, fantasy author Kiri Callaghan hosted a lively signing session for her newest release, The Hearth Witch’s Guide to Magic & Murder, giving visitors a memorable opportunity to meet acclaimed authors and discover their latest works in person.

Renovation Designed to Inspire

Barnes & Noble emphasized that the redesign aligns with its broader company vision of elevating the in-store experience and empowering local bookselling teams. In the company’s announcement, it stated:

“The new design of the Long Beach store showcases the ambition of Barnes & Noble to create exceptional local bookstores that marry the best traditions of independent bookselling with the resources of the historic chain.”

Shoppers visiting since the reopening have noticed expanded book sections, thoughtfully curated displays, modernized browsing areas, and a wider selection of gifts, paper goods and seasonal merchandise. Refreshed toys, games and media sections also give families, collectors and casual visitors plenty to explore.

The store’s reopening ties into the larger redevelopment efforts underway at Marina Pacifica. Simon Festinesi, CEO of Code Zero Management, who has been deeply involved in the project for the past three years, noted the crucial role of the waterfront in revitalizing the center:

“My biggest challenge has been to address the waterfront area. Efforts normally focus on the front of the shopping center, but there is an enormous impact that we can make on shopper experience by focusing on the water as well.”

Store Long Missed by the Community

The store’s temporary closure earlier this year drew widespread attention from Long Beach residents, many of whom frequented the location regularly before renovations. The reopening has been met with enthusiastic community response, both online and in person, underscoring the store’s importance as a cultural and social touchpoint in the city.

Store Manager Luisa Guardado, now welcoming readers back into the redesigned space, expressed her gratitude and excitement:

“I am very excited to reopen our doors at the Marina Shopping Center. I know our presence has been missed, and I’m excited to reengage with this community of readers.”

Over the years, the Marina Pacifica Barnes & Noble has served as a gathering place for book clubs, students, families and lifelong readers. With the reopening, many have described the store’s return as a meaningful restoration of a favorite community cornerstone.

Grand Opening Specials and Festive Perks

During reopening week, customers enjoyed a series of special promotions, including holiday displays and curated gift selections that have since filled the store, providing a timely boost for shoppers heading into the holiday season.

The reopening of Barnes & Noble at Marina Pacifica represents more than a refreshed retail space – it signals a renewed commitment to Long Beach’s vibrant reading culture. Blending 29 years of history with an invigorated vision for the future, the store has quickly reestablished itself as both a destination for books and a welcoming hub for community connection along the waterfront.

The Marina Pacifica Barnes & Noble officially reopened to the public on Nov. 19 and continues to welcome readers, families and book lovers as they celebrate this new chapter.
