E. 17th St. and Freeman Ave. At 1:30 a.m., wrote a Nextdoor poster, “some punks decided to roll an explosive device under a brand-new car.” The owner “noticed major damage and a note on her windshield that said “Text me, I know what happened to your car.” The neighbor sent her the video and we were shocked to say the least. She called Long Beach PD and they refused to send an officer out and told her to complete an online report, which she did right away.”

Anaheim Street and Freeman Ave. A 6 p.m. DUI check point attracted 10 unlicensed or suspended drivers and three drivers cited for traffic violations, none for DUI.

12th St. and Lewis Ave. At 7:28 p.m., while driving, 20-year-old Cori Michael Scales was shot and killed, crashing into a Southern California Edison utility pole.

Alamitos Beach. At 10:10 p.m., two jet skiers fell off their skis and tried to get back on. Female skier, 47-year-old Donna Durbay tried to assist her companion, but was unsuccessful. “She swam for approximately an hour before reaching the break wall,” said the Coast Guard. Spotted by a passing craft, she was rescued at 1:15 a.m. Her companion 53-year-old Paul Anthony Carbullido was missing until 11 a.m., when he was found in a flotation device, two and a half miles from the Seal Beach Pier and was hospitalized with hypothermia.

700 block of East Shoreline Dr. At 10:15 a.m., a 42-year-old man argued with a 37-year-old man outside the Gaucho Beach restaurant’s pickup window on the west side of the building. The older man was stabbed multiple times in his upper body and was transported to a hospital in stable condition. Both men were believed to be experiencing homelessness. The alleged assailant was duly arrested.

10th St. at Alamitos Ave. At 8:21 p.m., as a woman walked west in the north crosswalk of 10th Street, a driver of a Toyota pickup making a left turn from 10th Street onto northbound Alamitos struck and seriously injured her. She later died in a hospital. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

6900 Atlantic Ave. At 2:40 p.m., a driver of a 2019 Volvo was allegedly speeding northbound when he collided with a 2004 Chevrolet that was turning onto Atlantic Place from Atlantic Avenue. The impact caused the Chevrolet to overturn and sent the Volvo careening into the intersection, where it struck two stationary cars.

Lionila Yerena, 78, in the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene. The Volvo driver, 38-year-old Adalberto Delgado-Perez, of Compton initially fled the scene, then returned a short time later and was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing bodily injury. Bail: $100,000.

5700 Pacific Coast Hwy. At 10:35 p.m., a man driving a 2026 Tesla westbound on Pacific Coast Highway at high speed struck a 2025 Volkswagen sedan that was exiting the shopping center. The Tesla jumped the curb, striking and knocking over a cinderblock wall and damaging several parked vehicles. The Tesla driver was taken to a hospital, where he later died. A 48-year-old woman and a 43-year-old woman in the Volkswagen were both taken to hospitals for treatment. One in critical but stable condition, the other was in stable condition.

Broadway near Newport Ave. At 6:40 p.m., an underground electrical vault caught fire. Promptly extinguished by firefighters and de-energized by Southern California Edison, the inevitable blackout affected 26,626 customers, power restored to all but 16,456  households and businesses, and by 8:30 a.m., only 1,268 customers had no power on one of the year’s hottest days, with power promised at high noon.

Harco St. and Volk Ave. At 12:30, a Nextdoor poster heard what “sounded absolutely crazy and I can’t believe no cars got smashed.” Another poster asked, “Where are the police between the hours of 12 to 3 a.m.? Guys driving side by side up our streets with ball caps and tinted windows; One used a frequency device to unlock my car this morning. It’s a royal takeover and we need to know who the leaders are.“ Ball caps? Who knew?

2800 Block of 65th St. At 9:14 p.m., a shooting without the shooter and without injuries; only questions without immediate answers.

2400 Block of Atlantic Ave. As an 8:06 p.m. case of alleged domestic violence between a man and woman, the man stated he would shoot officers if they arrived. In a serious response, SWAT was called out, a search warrant was obtained and served. The suspect? Gonzo.

200 Block of East 57th St. A 1 a.m. shooting with a male juvenile victim with a non-life-threatening injury to the lower body involved in a possible negligent discharge of a firearm.

605 Fwy. at Spring St. At 7:25 a.m., a motor vehicle went over the side; at 7:34 a.m., different vehicle, different driver, same result.
