Community Coalition Rallies for 'Sanctuary City'
An overflow crowd of impassioned Long Beach residents lined up to speak to a "Sanctuary City" resolution Mar. 7 proposed by the City Council and Mayor Robert Garcia. Many were also in favor of allowing inclusive sanctuary for "undocumented" felons and other criminal offenders. Those offenses include rape, hate crimes, and gang-related offenses. Seventh District Councilman Roberto Uranga said, "....there are some people in jails now who I wish I could deport, who are white. You know, go back to Europe. Switzerland. Wherever.”
Speakers supporting the item came from organizations including Long Beach Islamic Center (LBIC), Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition (LBIRC), and Greater Long Beach Interfaith Community Organization (ICO). Many supporters wore shirts emblazoned with "Like a Lotus, We Rise."
Following a five-hour debate, the Council voted 6-2 (Councilman Daryl Supernaw and Councilwoman Stacy Mungo dissenting) to adopt the policy. The Council also considered a taxpayer supported legal defense fund of $250,000 for illegal immigrants facing deportation. This was directed to staff for future consideration (vote 5-3) with Councilwoman Suzie Price joining Mungo and Supernaw.
President Trump has previously threatened to withdraw federal funding and any support for local law enforcement in sanctuary cities by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). And, he recently escalated the battle, considering subjecting state and local officials to criminal charges.
[Editor's Note: Technically this agenda resolution was called the "Long Beach Values Act of 2018." Professionally we consider the obfuscation to be horse shit.]

Councilman Uranga would like to send back White felons to Europe, if it were possible that would work for me. However, as most are citizens of this country that won’t work. But this begs the question, why does Councilman Uranga want to keep the undocumented convicted rapist and gang members who are Latino? To provide an undocumented immigrant rapist with legal services payed for by taxpayer so they can stay in this Country is crossing a line, regardless of their race or ethnicity. We really need to stop this crazyness.
Uranga specifically wants to keep embezzlers here in the country. Have to wonder what his plans are when he leaves City Hall!?!...
Uranga should be dismissed for racists and ignorant remarks. What we should be doing is joining Los Alamitos.
Pure insanity! Our city officials are out of control. There are many of us in the community that would rather join with Los Alamitos to oppose what is really defined as, "Harboring criminals" and even borderline "Aiding and Abetting a criminal". Mr. Uranga's comment is ignorant and racists, He should be removed from office in my opinion. As far as paying for some type of legal counseling for these, "illegals", we will not.
